Mawlid an-Nabi — The Prophet's Birthday
Mawlid an-Nabi marks the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, observed on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal in the Hijri calendar. Many Muslims around the world commemorate this occasion with prayers, recitations of the Prophet's biography, and acts of charity.
Significance
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final messenger of God and the greatest human being in Islamic belief. Born in Makkah around 570 CE, he was sent as a mercy to all of mankind. His teachings transformed human civilization and continue to guide over 1.8 billion Muslims today.
Traditions & Worship
Gatherings for the recitation of the Prophet's biography (Seerah), sending blessings upon him (Salawat), and devotional poetry (Nasheeds) are common. Many Muslims increase their charity and good deeds on this occasion. Some communities organize community events and public processions.
